IIT Roorkee Concludes ICABSB-2025: A Global Convergence on Biotechnology, Bioprocessing & Structural Biology
IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand, Dec 17: The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee successfully concluded the International Conference on Advances in Biotechnology, Bioprocessing, and Structural Biology (ICABSB-2025), jointly organised with the Biotech Research Society of India (BRSI). The four-day global scientific conclave brought together nearly 200 invited speakers and over 700 delegates from more than 40 countries, reaffirming IIT Roorkee’s role as a leading hub for international collaboration in advanced biosciences.

The inaugural ceremony featured distinguished experts, including Prof. T.P. Singh (Distinguished Professor, AIIMS, New Delhi), Prof. Carol Post (Purdue University, USA), Prof. Sudhir Sopory (President, BRSI), Prof Jose Teixeira (University of Minho, Portugal), Prof. Ashok Pandey (CSIR-IITR, Lucknow), Prof. K. K. Pant (Director, IIT Roorkee), Dr. Binod Parmeswaran (CSIR-NIIST, Trivandrum), Shri Sanjiv Singh (Reliance Industries Ltd.), and several eminent international researchers, including Prof. Jeffrey T. Bolin (Purdue University, USA) Key scientific publications, including the ICABSB-2025 Abstract Book, BRSI Yearbook 2025, and new titles from Taylor & Francis, were also released during the ceremony.
Excellence in biosciences was recognised at the BRSI Awards Ceremony, where Prof. T. P. Singh received the Distinguished Professor Award and Prof. Pravindra Kumar was conferred the BHU Centennial Award, among other honours. Over the course of four days, the conference featured advanced thematic sessions that covered biofuels, bioprocessing, structural biology, drug and vaccine development, circular economy innovations, sustainable agriculture, and other emerging domains. The event also featured a dedicated interactive platform enabling school students to present their scientific work before an international audience, encouraging early participation in research and innovation.
Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, remarked,
“ICABSB-2025 demonstrates how India is shaping the global bio-innovation landscape. The convergence of international experts at IIT Roorkee underscores our commitment to advancing cutting-edge biotechnological solutions that contribute directly to national missions such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, National Biotechnology Development Strategy, and the growth of India’s USD 300-billion bio-economy vision.”
While addressing the gathering, Prof. Carol Post (Purdue University, USA) said,
“ICABSB-2025 has been an exceptional platform for advancing scientific dialogue at the intersection of biotechnology, bioprocessing, and structural biology. The diversity of perspectives represented here – spanning continents, disciplines, and research frontiers—reinforces the critical role of global collaboration in driving transformative breakthroughs in human health, sustainable materials, and environmental resilience.”
Prof. Sanjoy Ghosh, Chair, ICABSB-2025 & Head, BSBE, IIT Roorkee, added,
“This conference has strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration across bioprocessing, structural biology, and sustainable biotechnology. The knowledge exchange here will catalyse innovations that improve health outcomes, environmental stewardship, and industrial sustainability on a global scale.”
The deliberations and scientific exchange at ICABSB-2025 directly advance India’s national priorities and global sustainability commitments by contributing to key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The conference themes align strongly with national frameworks such as the National Biotechnology Development Strategy, the Bioeconomy 2030 Vision, Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Waste-to-Wealth Mission, and the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture, reinforcing biotechnology as a pivotal enabler of India’s sustainable, resilient, and innovation-driven future.
The Convener, Prof. Pravindra Kumar, extended his appreciation to all participating experts, delegates, partner institutions, and the organising teams for their collective contribution to the success of ICABSB-2025. He noted that the outcomes and collaborations forged during the conference would play a vital role in advancing high-impact research and strengthening IIT Roorkee’s global scientific engagement. He also emphasised the Institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering young researchers and developing innovative, sustainable solutions in biotechnology and bioprocessing that address emerging societal and environmental challenges.
