New Delhi, June 5: The government aims to expand rooftop solar installations to 75 lakh households by December 2026, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday, underscoring India’s accelerating transition toward clean and decentralized energy systems.

Speaking on the country’s renewable energy progress, the minister said rooftop solar is emerging as a key pillar of India’s energy strategy, helping households reduce electricity costs while contributing to the national goal of increasing clean energy capacity.

He noted that the initiative is designed to make solar power more accessible at the household level, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, while also supporting rural electrification and energy self-reliance.

According to the minister, the expansion of rooftop solar is expected to significantly reduce dependence on conventional power sources and lower carbon emissions from the residential sector. He added that the program aligns with India’s broader climate commitments and its long-term vision of achieving sustainable and inclusive energy growth.

Officials said the rooftop solar push is being supported through policy incentives, simplified installation processes, and greater involvement of local vendors and energy providers. The initiative also aims to generate employment opportunities in installation, maintenance, and related services across the country.

Experts believe the rapid scaling of rooftop solar reflects India’s growing leadership in renewable energy adoption and its commitment to decentralised power generation. They added that increased household participation in solar energy could play an important role in improving grid resilience and reducing electricity distribution losses.

The government reiterated its focus on making clean energy affordable, accessible, and widely adopted as part of its long-term strategy to transition toward a low-carbon economy.
