Rath Yatra 2026: Puri Police Arrest 103 Snatchers, Recover 203 Stolen Mobile Phones

Puri, July 18 (UDN): Puri Police have arrested 103 alleged snatchers and pickpockets and recovered 203 stolen mobile phones during an intensified security drive launched for the annual Rath Yatra, as lakhs of devotees thronged the holy city.

The special operation was carried out to curb theft, mobile snatching and pickpocketing, which often increase during large religious gatherings due to heavy crowds. Police acted on complaints received from pilgrims and launched coordinated raids across key locations in the city.

Special Security Drive

The anti-snatching campaign involved personnel from multiple police stations, dedicated anti-snatching squads and plainclothes officers deployed at crowded locations. The operation resulted in the arrest of 103 suspects allegedly involved in theft and snatching activities.

Police said 203 mobile phones were recovered during the drive. The seized devices will be returned to their rightful owners after the completion of the necessary legal formalities.

Tight Vigil Across Puri

With an unprecedented influx of devotees during the festival, security arrangements were significantly strengthened across the city. Round-the-clock surveillance was maintained at sensitive and high-footfall areas, including Bada Danda (Grand Road), the Shri Jagannath Temple precincts, Puri sea beach, bus stand, railway station, parking zones and other public gathering points.

Authorities also deployed plainclothes personnel to identify and apprehend habitual offenders attempting to exploit the festive rush.

Technology-Assisted Monitoring

Police relied on an extensive network of CCTV cameras, technical surveillance and intelligence inputs to monitor suspicious activity throughout the festival. The real-time surveillance enabled officers to quickly identify suspects and carry out prompt arrests, helping enhance security for pilgrims visiting the sacred city.

Puri Police have appealed to devotees to remain vigilant, keep their valuables secure and immediately report any suspicious activity or theft to the nearest police personnel. The special security drive is expected to continue until the conclusion of the Rath Yatra festivities.
