Large stretches of roads in residential, commercial and institutional areas were submerged, with water levels reaching knee height in several localities. The flooding posed challenges for commuters, pilgrims and local residents, particularly around areas witnessing heavy festival footfall.

Among the worst-affected locations were Saradha Bali, Ballav Mutt, Balagandi High School, the Police Canteen area, Hotel Nayak Plaza, and Bholanath Vidyapith, where rainwater accumulated after hours of continuous downpour.

The heavy rainfall also inundated major parking areas, slowing vehicular movement and creating traffic congestion on several roads leading to the Grand Road and adjoining localities.

Administration Launches Dewatering Operations

The district administration launched emergency measures overnight to minimise the impact of the flooding. High-capacity pump sets were deployed at critical waterlogging points to remove accumulated rainwater and restore normal movement.

Teams from the Odisha Fire and Emergency Services worked alongside the Puri Municipality to carry out dewatering operations in the affected areas. Officials remained on the ground through the night, monitoring the situation and coordinating drainage efforts.

However, persistent rainfall reduced the effectiveness of pumping operations, with several roads continuing to remain waterlogged even as authorities intensified efforts to clear the accumulated water.

The spell of heavy rain comes at a time when Puri is witnessing a massive influx of devotees for the Rath Yatra festivities, prompting authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and civic infrastructure to ensure public safety and smooth festival management.
