Paradip, July 7 (UDN): A daring daylight robbery attempt was thwarted in Odisha’s Paradip on Tuesday after the quick thinking of a woman and the prompt response of local residents forced two armed miscreants to flee before they could carry out the crime.
The incident occurred at Uday Vihar Colony, where the accused allegedly posed as customers looking to hire a vehicle to gain entry into a rented house. According to preliminary reports, the two men arrived on a motorcycle and approached the residence while the woman was alone.
After enquiring about the availability of a vehicle for rent, the duo allegedly forced their way inside and threatened the woman with a firearm in an apparent attempt to rob the house. Despite the threat, the woman raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours.
As residents rushed towards the house, one of the neighbouring women who came to help was also allegedly threatened at gunpoint. Realising that people had gathered and fearing capture, the miscreants abandoned their plan and escaped from the spot without stealing any valuables.
In their hurried escape, the accused left behind several articles, including a country-made firearm-related bag, a machete, a helmet, a towel and other belongings, which have been seized by the police as evidence.
A team from Paradip Lock Police Station reached the scene soon after the incident and began an investigation. Police have collected forensic evidence and are scrutinising CCTV footage from nearby areas to establish the identity and movement of the suspects.
Officials said efforts are underway to ascertain whether the accused had specifically targeted the house or were part of a larger criminal network operating in the region. A search has been launched to trace and apprehend the fleeing miscreants.
The incident has highlighted the importance of public vigilance and community response in preventing crime. Police have appealed to residents to remain alert, verify the identity of unknown visitors and immediately report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
Further investigation into the attempted robbery is in progress.
