Brahmapur, Sept. 23 (UDN): An undertrial prisoner was found dead inside Brahmapur Circle Jail in Odisha, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Shantanu Patra, a resident of the Khantapada area of Balasore district. According to police, his body was found hanging inside a toilet on the jail premises.

Arrested in 2025 Case

Patra had been lodged in the jail as an undertrial prisoner in connection with a serious criminal case registered under Nimakhandi police station.

Police said he was allegedly involved in the murder of a woman and an attempt to murder her daughter in the Srimanagar area on August 10, 2025.

Following the incident, Patra was reportedly traced and arrested in Karnataka. Brahmapur police subsequently arrested him on August 16, 2025, after which he was remanded to judicial custody at Brahmapur Circle Jail.

Inquiry Underway

The circumstances leading to Patra’s death are currently being investigated by the authorities.

Officials are expected to examine the circumstances inside the jail and other relevant evidence as part of the inquiry. Further details regarding the incident are awaited.
