Puri, Aug. 3 (UDN): Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik celebrated the first Monday of the holy month of Shravan by unveiling a striking sand sculpture of Lord Shiva on Puri Beach, drawing the attention of devotees and tourists alike.

Standing nearly eight feet tall, the intricately crafted artwork portrays Lord Shiva in a calm meditative posture and bears the devotional message, “Har Har Mahadev.” The sculpture symbolises peace, spiritual awakening and the eternal power of Mahadev, reflecting the religious significance of Shravan Somvar for millions of devotees.

The installation incorporates several sacred elements associated with Lord Shiva, including the Shiva Linga, Trishul, Damaru, crescent moon, serpent, Rudraksha beads, and the holy River Ganga flowing from Shiva’s matted locks. Two Kanwariyas carrying sacred water are also featured, representing the age-old tradition of offering holy water to Lord Shiva during the Shravan month.

Created with the assistance of students from the Sudarsan Sand Art Institute, the sculpture pays tribute to one of Hinduism’s most revered observances, when devotees across the country undertake fasting, prayers and special rituals in honour of Mahadev.

Speaking on the occasion, Pattnaik said the artwork was dedicated to prayers for global peace, harmony and the well-being of humanity. He expressed hope that Lord Shiva’s blessings would inspire compassion, positivity and unity, while the sculpture would serve as a reminder of faith and spiritual togetherness.

Widely acclaimed for taking Indian sand art to the global stage, Sudarsan Pattnaik has represented the country at more than 65 international sand sculpture championships, festivals and cultural events. Through his creations, he continues to celebrate India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage while spreading messages of peace, devotion and universal brotherhood.
