Ganjam, Aug. 10 (UDN): Severe sea erosion has emerged as a major concern for residents of Aryapalli village in Odisha’s Ganjam district, with powerful waves damaging roads and eating into stretches of the coastline in the Podampeta area.

The situation has worsened over the past three days, with three major roads reportedly damaged by strong waves. The latest incident occurred late Sunday night when the main road connecting K. Aryapalli village with the Marine Police Station was washed away, disrupting direct connectivity.

Roads Washed Away, Daily Life Affected

The erosion has caused considerable difficulties for residents who depend on the affected roads for commuting, fishing and other daily activities.

Locals said schoolchildren are also facing problems reaching educational institutions, while fishermen are struggling to access routes traditionally used to reach fishing areas and transport their catch.

A resident said the village, which is more than a century old, is now facing growing concerns over the advancing sea.

“The biggest problem right now is transportation. Several roads connecting the village to the outside world have been damaged, making daily movement difficult. Children are also facing difficulties travelling to school,” the resident said.

Sea Inches Closer to Village

The situation has become more alarming as waves are reportedly reaching areas close to the village cremation ground.

A local fisherman said the sea is currently around 20 to 30 metres from the village, raising fears that continued erosion could push the shoreline even closer to residential areas.

The damaged roads have also affected access to the panchayat office, creating additional difficulties for villagers and fishermen dependent on the routes for their livelihood.

Villagers Demand Immediate Protection

Residents have urged the authorities to take urgent measures to prevent further coastal erosion and protect the remaining road network.

They have demanded the construction of a protective seawall and stone pitching along the vulnerable stretch to reduce the impact of powerful waves.

With the coastline continuing to erode, villagers fear that further delay could result in more roads being washed away and increase the threat to nearby homes and public infrastructure.

Locals have appealed for immediate intervention before the situation deteriorates further.
