Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: Heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Arnab has pushed parts of Ganjam district into a flood-like situation, with the Rushikulya River flowing above the danger level at Purushottampur and several roads submerged under floodwater.

According to reports, the river’s water level at Purushottampur has reached 17.500 metres against the danger mark of 16.835 metres, raising concerns for residents in low-lying areas.
The rising water has submerged the road connecting Tankachhai and Hinjilicut under nearly three feet of water. Several villages have also reported knee-deep flooding, disrupting daily movement and connectivity.
Sorada Villages Hit by Rising River Water
Sorada is among the worst-affected areas, having experienced heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the past three days.
The swelling Rushikulya River has inundated Palakatu, Nuagaon, Tatabali and Suramani villages under Sorada block, affecting road access and raising concerns over the safety of residents.
The continuing rainfall has added pressure on local authorities as they monitor water levels and assess the situation in vulnerable areas.
Ghodahada River Flooding Cuts Off Key Highway Route
The situation has also deteriorated in Sanakhemundi and Digapahandi blocks following a sharp rise in the water level of the Ghodahada River.
Floodwater is reportedly flowing around five feet above the Ghodahada bridge near Palaspur, cutting off the Digapahandi–Aska road, which forms part of National Highway 326.
The inundation has brought traffic to a standstill, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides of the affected stretch and causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.
Police personnel have reached the spot and placed barricades near the bridge. Authorities have warned people against attempting to cross the flooded structure, citing the risk to life.
Evacuation and Safety Measures Intensified
The Ganjam district administration has begun moving people from low-lying areas to safer locations as floodwaters continue to affect vulnerable settlements.
Residents have been advised to stay away from rivers, avoid submerged roads and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Commuters are also urged to check road conditions before travelling through flood-affected areas.
Cyclone Arnab’s Rainfall Impact Continues
Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast with reported maximum sustained winds of 125–135 kmph and gusts reaching 150 kmph. Although the system subsequently weakened into a deep depression and moved towards Chhattisgarh, its associated rainfall continued to affect southern Odisha.
The persistent downpour has contributed to rising river levels, waterlogging and disruptions to road connectivity across parts of Ganjam.
