Raurkela, July 22 (UDN): The district administration has directed all government offices and departments to adopt ‘Raurkela’ as the official English spelling of the Steel City in all administrative records and communications with immediate effect.

The directive was issued through a notification by the Office of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM), Raurkela, on July 21, in line with the Odisha government’s ongoing initiative to standardise the English spellings of administrative units based on Odia pronunciation.

Revised Spelling to Be Used Across Official Platforms

As per the notification, the name ‘Raurkela’ will now be used uniformly in all official documents, letters, reports, notifications, signboards, websites, records and other government communications.

The administration has instructed all departments and government offices under its jurisdiction to ensure strict compliance with the revised spelling.

Follows State Government’s Language Reform Initiative

The order has been issued in accordance with the Revenue and Disaster Management Department’s notification on the standardisation of English spellings of administrative units and a subsequent government communication dated July 20, 2026.

The state government had earlier clarified that the exercise aims to align English spellings with the authentic pronunciation of Odia place names and does not involve any change in the official names of districts, cities or administrative units.

Departments Asked to Ensure Uniform Implementation

The notification has been circulated to all government departments in Raurkela with instructions to implement the revised spelling across physical and digital records and to give the order wide publicity.

The move forms part of the Odisha government’s broader effort to ensure consistency in official nomenclature while preserving the linguistic and cultural identity reflected in Odia place names.
