Odisha weather alert: IMD forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms across districts till September 21

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 16 (UDN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for several districts of Odisha, forecasting spells of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next five days.

The weather system is expected to remain active across different parts of the state from September 17 to 21, with both coastal and southern districts likely to experience adverse weather at different intervals.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms forecast for September 17

For the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on September 17, heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput and Gajapati.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely at isolated places across several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Rain activity to continue through September 19

During the period from 8:30 am on September 17 to 8:30 am on September 18, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of up to 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places in a number of districts.

The affected areas are expected to include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

For the following 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on September 19, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may also occur in several coastal, northern and southern districts.

Southern Odisha likely to see heavier rain

From September 19 to 20, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely in several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Rain warning extended till September 21

For the September 20-21 period, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface winds of 30-40 kmph are also expected in a wide area covering northern, coastal, western and southern districts.

The IMD has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms and lightning activity and follow local weather advisories, particularly in districts under the yellow warning.
