Bhubaneswar, Sept. 7 (UDN): The Odisha government has stepped up measures to address structural safety concerns in urban areas, with Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announcing action against weak and unsafe buildings.

The move comes amid renewed concerns over building safety following the recent collapse of a structure in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, in which seven people have reportedly died.

Mahapatra said the government has begun identifying vulnerable structures in cities and is taking steps to remove buildings that pose a threat to public safety.

Unsafe Government Buildings Under Action

According to the minister, several weak government buildings located in urban areas are already being demolished.

The government has also initiated action against unsafe educational and community infrastructure. Notices have been issued for the demolition of several structurally weak school buildings and Anganwadi centres, he said.

Directions have further been issued to concerned authorities to identify and demolish unsafe structures within city limits.

Private Buildings Also Under Watch

The safety drive will not be limited to government properties. The minister said notices would also be served to owners of unsafe private buildings where demolition is considered necessary.

The government is maintaining close surveillance of vulnerable structures to prevent accidents and protect residents and the public.

“We are keeping a strict watch on this matter,” Mahapatra said.

The latest move is aimed at preventing tragedies caused by structurally compromised buildings and ensuring greater safety in Odisha’s growing urban centres.
