Bhubaneswar, July 24 (UDN): Odisha’s freight and logistics network is set for a major expansion with 12 Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminals (GCTs) already operational across the state and 36 more locations receiving in-principle approval for development, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha.
In a written reply to Parliament, the Railway Minister said the initiative is aimed at strengthening rail-based freight transportation, improving industrial connectivity and creating a more efficient logistics ecosystem in Odisha.
12 Cargo Terminals Already Operational
The commissioned terminals are strategically located across major industrial and mineral-producing regions, including Paradeep (three terminals), Kechobahal-Laikera, Jajpur Keonjhar Road, Brajrajnagar, Brundamal, Machapur, Barpali Road, Sogra, Jakhpura and Bondamunda Junction.
These facilities are expected to facilitate faster movement of bulk commodities and support key sectors such as mining, steel, power, manufacturing and port-based industries.
36 More Locations Cleared
The Railway Ministry has also granted in-principle approval for 36 additional Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals in Odisha, significantly enhancing the state’s future freight-handling capacity.
Among the proposed projects, a new cargo terminal at Porjanpur (PRNR) in the Keonjhar Lok Sabha constituency is currently under consideration.
Strengthening Odisha’s Logistics Ecosystem
According to the Ministry, the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy encourages private investment in railway freight infrastructure while improving first-mile and last-mile connectivity for industries.
Terminal locations are selected after evaluating factors such as industrial demand, cargo generation potential, availability of railway infrastructure and regional logistics requirements.
The expansion is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency and enable industries to transport goods more quickly through the rail network.
National Rollout Gains Momentum
Across the country, 142 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals have been commissioned so far, while approvals have been granted for 310 additional terminals.
The operational terminals have a combined freight-handling capacity of 224 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The initiative has attracted nearly ₹10,000 crore in private investment, with cargo movement through these facilities touching 146 million tonnes during 2025-26.
With its abundant mineral resources, expanding industrial base and strategic coastal connectivity, Odisha is expected to emerge as one of the key beneficiaries of the Gati Shakti initiative, further strengthening its position as a major logistics and freight hub in eastern India.
