Bhubaneswar, Sept. 15 (UDN): The five young orangutans rescued from Balasore and currently undergoing treatment at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar are set to be moved from their glass enclosure to an open enclosure as their health continues to improve.

Zoo authorities said the shift is aimed at allowing the animals to gradually become accustomed to a more natural environment while ensuring that their health remains under close observation.

Orangutans responding well to treatment

The health of all five rescued orangutans is currently considered largely stable. Zoo officials said the animals are eating normally and have been seen moving around and playing, indicating positive signs of recovery.

Despite the improvement, the orangutans will continue to remain under quarantine after being shifted to the open enclosure. Access for visitors is also expected to remain restricted to minimise disturbance and reduce the risk of infection.

Medical team keeps close watch

The animals continue to receive round-the-clock attention from the zoo’s veterinary and care teams.

One of the orangutans developed a fever on Monday, prompting intensified monitoring. The animal remains under observation, while medical staff continue to keep track of the condition of all five.

The feeding schedule has also been adjusted, with the orangutans being provided food at intervals of around three hours after they developed gastric discomfort.

Zoo authorities have additionally installed wire mesh around the quarantine area to prevent mosquitoes from entering and to provide a safer environment for the young animals.

Expert panel overseeing rehabilitation

To strengthen the specialised care being provided to the rescued orangutans, a five-member technical committee has been constituted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).

The committee comprises experts with experience in orangutan care and will monitor the animals’ health, welfare and overall management. The Director of Nandankanan has been appointed as the committee’s convener.

The panel will provide technical guidance to zoo officials as the five orangutans undergo rehabilitation and gradually adjust to their new surroundings.

Authorities said their health will continue to be closely monitored during the transition to the open enclosure, with further decisions to be taken based on their recovery and adaptation.
