Sonepur, July 10 (UDN): The water level of the Mahanadi River has begun rising in Odisha’s Sonepur district following the release of the season’s first floodwater from the Hirakud Dam, prompting authorities to maintain close surveillance over the river’s course.
The Hirakud reservoir released floodwater through 10 sluice gates on Thursday as part of reservoir management during the monsoon. The initial discharge reached Sonepur early Friday morning, nearly 18 hours after its release, while the remaining flow continued to move downstream during the day.
Officials said the increase in the river’s water level is a normal consequence of the controlled release from the reservoir and clarified that no flood situation has been reported in the district. However, district authorities and the Water Resources Department are closely monitoring the river and its downstream impact.
As a precautionary measure, fishermen along the Mahanadi have shifted their boats and fishing nets to safer locations to prevent damage from the stronger current. Residents living in low-lying and riverbank areas have also been advised to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
The administration has appealed to people to avoid venturing into the river or engaging in activities along the riverbanks until the water level stabilises. Emergency response teams have been kept on alert, although officials reiterated that the situation remains under control.
With additional water from Hirakud expected to continue flowing downstream, authorities will maintain continuous monitoring to ensure public safety and respond promptly to any change in river conditions.
