Keonjhar, Aug. 31 (UDN): A woman lost her life after a mud wall of her house collapsed amid continuous heavy rainfall in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, highlighting the dangers posed by the ongoing monsoon.
The incident occurred in Raigudi village under Champua police station limits, where the victim, Purnimi Mahant, was asleep when the rain-weakened wall gave way.
Wall collapses while woman was asleep
According to local residents, the area had been experiencing incessant rainfall, which is believed to have weakened the structure of the mud house. The wall suddenly collapsed during the night, trapping Purnimi beneath the debris.
Hearing the loud crash, her mother-in-law and nearby residents rushed to the house and rescued her from under the rubble before shifting her to Champua Hospital.
However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police begin investigation
After receiving information about the incident, Champua Police reached the village and initiated an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the legal procedure.
The tragedy comes as several parts of Odisha continue to witness heavy rainfall, raising concerns over the safety of vulnerable mud houses during the monsoon season.
Meanwhile, villagers have urged the administration to provide immediate financial assistance to the bereaved family and ensure rehabilitation support.
