Sundargarh, Sept. 4 (UDN): Coal transportation at the Garjanbahal coal mine in Odisha’s Sundargarh district came to a grinding halt on Friday after a violent clash between two groups allegedly linked to rival transport operators left four truck drivers injured.

The confrontation reportedly broke out late Thursday night within the Hemgir Police Station limits over the order of trucks waiting in line for coal loading. According to local sources, an argument over queue priority escalated into a physical assault involving drivers and employees associated with two transport companies.

Four drivers affiliated with SUPL Transport sustained injuries during the clash and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been officially disclosed.

The incident triggered protests by transport workers on Friday morning, with dozens of drivers gathering outside the mine entrance and blocking the movement of coal-laden vehicles. The demonstration brought transportation operations at the mine to a complete standstill for several hours.

Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the assault and sought stronger security measures to ensure the safety of drivers engaged in coal transportation.

Police from Hemgir Police Station reached the spot after receiving information about the unrest and intervened to restore order. Officers held discussions with the protesting workers and assured them that appropriate action would be taken following a detailed investigation.

Police have registered the incident and launched an inquiry to determine the circumstances leading to the clash. Further investigation is underway.
