Baleshwar, Sept. 29 (UDN): A 65-year-old woman died after being swept away by swollen floodwaters of the Subarnarekha River while she had gone for a bath in Baleshwar district.

The deceased was identified as Sumitra Nayak, wife of late Kahnu Nayak of Sana Aunsa village under Bhograi block.

Swept Away At Ausa Ghat

According to reports, Sumitra had gone to Ausa Ghat for bathing along with three others.

With the Subarnarekha in spate, the water level at the ghat was reportedly high. Sumitra allegedly lost her footing and was swept away by the strong current.

Locals, along with Pasarbindha Sarpanch Sumant Behera, managed to rescue her and rushed her to the Jaleswarpur Community Health Centre (CHC).

However, doctors declared her brought dead.

Body Handed Over After Post-Mortem

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the health centre following the incident.

The body was subsequently handed over to the bereaved family for the last rites.

The incident has highlighted the risks faced by residents near water bodies as the Subarnarekha continues to remain swollen amid the prevailing flood situation in the region.
