Elephant Pulled to Safety From Abandoned Well After Hours-Long Rescue in Balangir

Balangir, Oct 13 (UDN): An elephant was rescued from an abandoned well near Dhumamara Hill in Hirapur village under the Muribahal Forest Range of Odisha’s Balangir district on Tuesday after a rescue operation lasting several hours.

According to Forest Department officials, the elephant was part of a herd that had strayed from a nearby forest when it accidentally fell into the well and became trapped. Local residents noticed the incident and alerted forest authorities, prompting an immediate response.

A team of forest personnel rushed to the site and began efforts to bring the animal out safely.

Water Drained to Facilitate Rescue

With the abandoned well filled with water, rescuers first used an electric generator to drain it and make the operation safer and more manageable.

After preparing the site, the team deployed a crawler excavator to help lift the elephant out of the well.

The rescue required several hours of coordinated effort by the personnel involved. The operation eventually succeeded, and the elephant was brought out of the well.

Elephant’s Condition Yet to Be Confirmed

The successful rescue brought the operation to a close, although further details about the elephant’s health and possible injuries were not immediately available.

It was also unclear whether the animal had rejoined its herd following the rescue.

The incident highlights the risks posed to wildlife by abandoned wells and other uncovered excavations near forest areas. Such hazards can endanger animals moving beyond their usual habitats in search of food or water.

The Forest Department’s response helped bring the incident to a successful conclusion, while further information about the elephant’s condition is awaited.
