New Delhi, Sept. 7: The death toll in the multi-storey building collapse at Satya Niketan in Delhi has risen to seven, while rescue teams continue search operations amid fears that more people remain trapped under the rubble.

Officials said 11 people have been rescued so far. During overnight operations, one more person was pulled out of the debris but was found dead.

The collapsed building was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students, many of whom were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus. Police said the premises had the capacity to accommodate around 40 people.

The structure, estimated to be 40 to 50 years old, comprised a basement and five upper floors. The collapse reportedly occurred around 1.30 pm while repair work was being carried out in the basement. Officials have also indicated that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the incident.

Teams from the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Disaster Management Authority are engaged in the search and rescue operation.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Following an inspection of the site, she directed officials to ascertain the circumstances that led to the collapse and ordered registration of an FIR against the building owner.

The case has been registered at South Campus Police Station against alleged owner Hariram and others, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said.

The Chief Minister has assured that those found responsible for the tragedy will face strict legal action.

Rescue personnel continued their efforts through the night and are working to locate and safely evacuate anyone who may still be trapped beneath the debris. Further details are awaited.
