Bhubaneswar, July 28 (UDN): A deep depression over north interior Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal continued to move west-northwestwards on Tuesday, triggering widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across northern parts of the state and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert for several districts.

According to the IMD, the weather system was centred over north interior Odisha, close to Baripada and Balasore, and was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of around 12 kmph. It is expected to continue its journey across north Odisha towards south Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh, bringing intense rainfall along its path.
Heavy Rain Pounds Northern Odisha
Several districts witnessed torrential rain as the system intensified. Balasore town recorded the highest rainfall of 25 cm, while Nilgiri, Jaleswar and Remuna each received 24 cm, leading to severe waterlogging and inundation in many low-lying areas.
The incessant rainfall disrupted normal life, with roads submerged, traffic movement affected and localised flooding reported from several parts of the affected districts. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and keeping disaster response teams on standby.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The IMD has placed multiple districts under a Red Alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Residents have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
The weather office has cautioned that the intense rainfall could trigger urban flooding, waterlogging, reduced visibility and temporary disruption of transport and essential services in vulnerable areas.
Fishermen Warned Against Venturing Into Sea
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the northwest Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha-West Bengal coast until further notice.
Strong gusty winds and rough sea conditions are expected to continue along the coast as the depression moves inland, posing risks to marine activities.
The state administration has asked district authorities to remain prepared for any emergency arising from heavy rainfall and has urged people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to exercise caution.
