Puri, Oct 26: Boat services across Chilika Lake have been suspended from October 26 to 29 as a precautionary measure amid the threat of a possible cyclone over the Bay of Bengal. The Puri district administration has restricted boat movement across the lake to prevent accidents during potentially adverse weather conditions.

The suspension covers passenger ferries and tourist boats, affecting a vital mode of transportation for residents who depend on water routes for their daily commute. People living in Krushnaprasad block, situated along Chilika Lake, are expected to face difficulties travelling during the four-day restriction.
The decision comes as authorities step up cyclone preparedness across Odisha, with forecasts indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall and strong winds in vulnerable districts.
All Passenger and Tourist Boat Operations Halted
Under the restrictions, boat operators have been directed to suspend services for the specified period. The measure aims to reduce the risk of accidents caused by rough water, strong winds and deteriorating weather conditions as the cyclone threat develops.
Chilika Lake serves as an important transport link for communities living around its islands and adjoining areas. The temporary shutdown could therefore disrupt routine travel for residents as well as affect tourist movement.
The administration has prioritised public safety while monitoring developments related to the approaching weather system.
Local Officials Directed to Enforce Restrictions
The district administration has instructed local officials to monitor boat ghats and water bodies to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order. Authorities have also been asked to remain vigilant throughout the restriction period.
Officials have warned that violations will invite strict action. Boat operators and members of the public are expected to follow the instructions until services are permitted to resume.
The restrictions are intended to prevent avoidable emergencies and reduce pressure on disaster response teams during a period of heightened weather-related risk.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea because of the possibility of strong winds and deteriorating marine conditions. They have been urged to remain ashore and avoid fishing activities until the weather improves and official advisories permit them to resume operations.
The precautionary measures form part of the wider effort to protect coastal communities and people dependent on water-based livelihoods.
Cyclone Preparedness Intensified Across Odisha
Odisha authorities are strengthening preparedness as the developing weather system is forecast to approach the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28. Although the projected track may change, parts of Odisha could experience heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The suspension of Chilika boat services is among the precautionary steps being taken to minimise risks to residents and visitors. People travelling in and around the lake are advised to check with local authorities for updates before planning their journeys.
The district administration is expected to review restrictions in accordance with weather conditions and official guidance. Boat services should resume only after the relevant authorities permit operations.
