BMC-BDA joint operation underway; heavy police deployment amid residents’ concerns over rehabilitation
Bhubaneswar, Aug. 11 (UDN): Tension prevailed in parts of Niladri Vihar on Tuesday as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) launched a major eviction drive targeting around 330 transit houses.
The demolition operation is being carried out across Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of the locality as authorities move to clear the transit housing structures.
330 Houses Identified for Demolition
Niladri Vihar reportedly has around 890 transit houses, of which approximately 330 have been identified for demolition during the current drive.
According to reports, some beneficiaries continued to occupy the transit houses even after being allotted alternative accommodation under the Budha Vihar Housing Project.
However, the eviction has also triggered objections from some residents, who claim they are eligible for permanent housing but have not yet received accommodation under the rehabilitation scheme.
Residents Raise Rehabilitation Concerns
Some residents have strongly opposed the demolition, arguing that they should not be removed without being provided with alternative accommodation.
The situation has generated resentment in the locality, with some residents reportedly making emotional appeals against being forced to vacate their homes.
The conflicting claims over housing allotments have added to the tension surrounding the eviction operation.
Three Platoons of Police Deployed
Anticipating possible resistance and a law-and-order situation, the authorities have deployed three platoons of police personnel at the site.
Police teams from Nandankanan, Chandrasekharpur, Chandaka and Infocity police stations have also been assigned to assist with the operation and maintain peace in the area.
The administration is closely monitoring the situation as the demolition drive continues. The immediate challenge for the authorities is to carry out the eviction while addressing the concerns of residents who claim they are yet to receive their promised rehabilitation benefits.
