Salepur, Oct 13 (UDN): Student union elections at Japakud Women’s College in Salepur, Cuttack district, have been cancelled following a three-day standoff between two groups of students over the rejection of nomination papers.

Tensions reportedly escalated after the nomination papers of candidates contesting for the posts of president and secretary from one group were rejected. The decision sparked protests and raised concerns over the possibility of a disturbance on the college campus.

Rejected Nominations Trigger Protest

The dispute intensified after the affected candidates and their supporters opposed the rejection of the nomination papers. They staged a sit-in outside the college, demanding action over the issue.

The disagreement continued for three days, creating a tense atmosphere on the campus. Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Regional Director Orders Cancellation

In view of the prevailing tension, the Regional Director of Education ordered the cancellation of the student union elections at the college.

The college principal said the decision was taken in view of alleged violations of the election code of conduct and concerns about possible untoward incidents. A formal notice was subsequently issued announcing the cancellation of the polls.
