Jeypore Khanda Puja Highlights Royal Heritage and Tribal Traditions of Dussehra

Jeypore, October 13 (UDN): The age-old tradition of Khanda Puja, or ceremonial sword worship, was observed at Moti Mahal in the Jayapur Royal Palace complex on Monday, celebrating the region’s rich martial legacy and the cultural traditions associated with Jayapur Dussehra.

Organised by the Koraput District Kshetriya Khandayat Paika Samaj, the annual ritual was performed in the presence of Jayapur Yuvaraj Bisweshwar Chandra Chud Dev. Following the ceremony, a procession set out from Moti Mahal towards the Dussehra grounds, with district-level members and community representatives participating in the programme.

Sword Worship Reflects Martial Heritage

Khanda Puja, also known as Shastra Pujan, holds a special place in the traditional Dussehra celebrations of the region. The ritual symbolises courage, strength, discipline and the triumph of good over evil.

Historically associated with the royal traditions of Jayapur, the ceremony reflects the martial heritage of the former royal family and the enduring cultural significance of weapon worship during the Vijaya Dashami festivities.

Tribal Customs Add a Distinctive Identity

Jayapur Dussehra stands apart for its unique blend of royal customs, tribal traditions and collective community participation. Among its most distinctive observances is Lathi Pujan, during which sacred bamboo staffs brought by tribal communities from different villages are worshipped.

These staffs represent the respective village deities and carry deep religious and cultural significance for the participating communities. Their presence highlights the close relationship between indigenous traditions and the region’s wider Dussehra celebrations.

Traditions Continue Beyond the Monarchy

In earlier times, Jayapur Dussehra was marked by the participation of the King, the arrival of tribal chieftains and traditional processions. Although the monarchy has ended, many of these customs continue to be observed, with local communities working to preserve their heritage for future generations.

The traditional Dussehra Bhetghat, or community gathering, remains another important feature of the celebrations. It provides an opportunity for people from different communities to exchange greetings, strengthen social relationships and reaffirm their shared cultural identity.

A Celebration of Unity and Cultural Continuity

The annual Khanda Puja is more than a religious ceremony; it represents the enduring connection between Jayapur’s royal history, tribal customs and community life.

Through the continued observance of these rituals, the people of the region preserve a distinctive cultural legacy that brings together historical traditions, spiritual beliefs and social harmony during the Dussehra festivities.
