BJD Alleges Political Interference in Odisha Campus Polls, Seeks Answers Over Election Cancellations

Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 (UDN): The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has accused the BJP-led Odisha government of interfering in student union elections, alleging that ministers and MLAs are exerting pressure on college principals and university vice-chancellors to favour candidates backed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The allegations were levelled by BJD leaders during a press conference on Friday, where they questioned the conduct of campus elections and accused the ruling party of undermining democratic practices in educational institutions.

The regional party claimed that political influence was affecting the electoral process and alleged that polls had been avoided in institutions where BJP-backed candidates were unlikely to secure victories. The allegations have not been independently verified.

BJD Questions Timing of Election Schedule

BJD leader Bhrugu Buxipatra alleged that the government announced the election schedule only after student organisations affiliated with the BJP had completed their preparations.

He further claimed that college principals and university vice-chancellors were being pressured to ensure favourable outcomes for ABVP candidates.

The BJD described the alleged interference as an attempt to influence student representation and called for a fair and transparent electoral process across colleges and universities.

Cancellation of Polls in 206 Colleges Under Scrutiny

BJD Yuva Janata Dal president Chinmoy Sahu questioned the reported cancellation of student union elections in 206 colleges and sought an explanation from the state’s Higher Education Minister.

Sahu also alleged that the government was failing to adhere to the principles of the Lyngdoh Commission guidelines, which provide a framework for conducting student union elections in higher educational institutions.

He demanded clarity on the reasons behind the cancellations and questioned the government’s commitment to holding campus elections in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.

BCJD Warns of Statewide Protest

BCJD president Ipsita Sahu said student union elections in the past were generally conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and camaraderie. She alleged that the current situation had adversely affected democratic participation among students.

Accusing the state government of restricting young people’s opportunities to exercise their democratic rights on campus, she warned that the organisation would launch street protests if the government failed to address its concerns.

Campus Polls Become a Political Flashpoint

The controversy has intensified the political debate surrounding student union elections in Odisha, with the BJD demanding accountability over election cancellations and alleged political interference.

The opposition has called for greater transparency in the electoral process, while the allegations concerning pressure on educational administrators remain to be independently established.

The government’s response to the specific allegations and the reasons behind the reported cancellations will be crucial to addressing the concerns raised over the conduct of campus elections across the state.
