Cuttack, July 23 (UDN): A newly constructed stretch of road at Nuapada-Khapuria in Cuttack caved in on Thursday following heavy rainfall, disrupting traffic and triggering allegations of substandard construction.

The incident occurred after incessant rain lashed the city, causing a section of the recently completed road to collapse. Authorities immediately cordoned off the affected area, suspended vehicular movement, and diverted traffic to ensure public safety.

No casualties or injuries were reported as no vehicles or pedestrians were passing through the stretch when the road gave way, averting a major mishap.

Questions Raised Over Construction Quality

The collapse has sparked outrage among local residents, who questioned the quality of the roadwork. The local corporator alleged that the road had been completed barely 15 days ago and claimed that poor construction standards may have led to the collapse.

Calling for accountability, the corporator demanded an independent inquiry into the execution of the project, strict action against those responsible if lapses are established, and reconstruction of the damaged stretch in accordance with prescribed engineering and quality standards.

Administration Seals Off Site

Following the incident, officials barricaded the damaged portion of the road and deployed personnel to prevent public access. Engineers are expected to inspect the site to ascertain whether the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall, construction defects, or a combination of both.

The incident has renewed concerns over the durability and quality of recently completed public infrastructure projects, with residents urging the authorities to strengthen quality control and ensure greater accountability in the execution of civic works.
