Landslide Threat: State Highway-48 Closed Between Borigumma And Raniguda In Koraput Amid Cyclone Murasu

Koraput, Nov 2 (UDN): In view of the prevailing weather conditions triggered by Cyclone Murasu, the Koraput district administration has ordered the closure of a vulnerable stretch of State Highway-48 between Borigumma and Raniguda as a precautionary measure against possible landslides.

Continuous rainfall in the region has reportedly loosened soil along the adjoining hills, triggering mudslides and the falling of rocks onto the roadside. The deteriorating conditions have raised concerns over the safety of commuters travelling along the route.

According to reports, the affected stretch has been identified as particularly vulnerable to landslides, having witnessed similar incidents following heavy rainfall last month.

NH-326 Suggested As Alternative Route

Following the closure, the district administration has advised commuters to avoid the Borigumma-Raniguda stretch of State Highway-48 and use National Highway-326 as an alternative route.

The restriction will remain in force until weather conditions improve and further orders are issued by the authorities.

Motorists and other road users have been urged to exercise caution and strictly follow the instructions issued by the administration to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

IMD Warns Of Heavy Rainfall And Strong Winds

The precautionary measure comes amid a weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Koraput district as Cyclone Murasu moves towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

The weather office has forecast heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds in the district on Monday.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 60 kmph at isolated places.

Administration On Alert

With the possibility of further rainfall and adverse weather conditions, the district administration is closely monitoring vulnerable road stretches to minimise risks to commuters.

The closure of the highway section is aimed at preventing accidents caused by falling rocks, soil erosion and sudden landslides during the cyclone-related weather conditions.

Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through vulnerable hilly areas, remain alert to official advisories and use designated alternative routes until normal traffic movement is restored.
