Bhubaneswar, Oct. 12 (UDN): Confusion over the date of Dussehra has emerged in Odisha, with Vijayadashami celebrations scheduled for October 20 at Durga Puja pandals, while the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri will observe the festival on October 21 in accordance with its traditional rituals.
The variation has left many devotees wondering which date to follow, as religious almanacs and regional customs differ in their observance of the festival. Temple authorities, however, follow established ritual schedules based on traditional practices and the lunar calendar.
Why Are Dussehra Dates Different?
According to the information provided, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 20 at pandals where clay idols of Goddess Durga are worshipped. At the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the observance will take place a day later, on October 21.
The difference is attributed to variations in religious traditions, lunar-calendar calculations and temple-specific rituals. While Vijayadashami falls on October 20 in several calendars, some regional traditions follow October 21 for their celebrations.
The variation highlights how the timing of major Hindu festivals can differ depending on the customs followed by individual temples and communities.
Special Rituals Scheduled at Puri Jagannath Temple
At the Shree Jagannath Temple, the Dussehra observance will feature special rituals at the shrine of Goddess Bimala, an important deity within the temple complex.
The festival will also be observed at the Kakudikhai shrine, which is associated with Goddess Bimala.
As part of the celebrations, the Chaturdha Murti—the four deities of the temple—will be adorned in Suna Besha, or golden attire. Ayudha Puja will also be performed as part of the traditional observances.
According to the temple’s ritual schedule, Saptami will be observed on October 17, Ashtami on October 18 and Navami on October 19. A special rest ritual is scheduled for October 20, followed by the temple’s Dussehra observance on October 21.
Jagannath Culture Expert Explains the Difference
Eminent researcher of Jagannath culture Pandit Surya Narayan Rath Sharma said such differences in festival dates often create confusion among devotees, making it important to follow established religious guidelines.
He emphasised that the public should be guided by the almanacs prepared by panjika makers and approved by the relevant religious authorities, including the Srimandir administration, the Mukti Mandap, the Gajapati Maharaja and the Shankaracharya.
His remarks underline the importance of established temple traditions in determining the timing of religious observances.
Devotees Advised to Follow Temple Schedules
With different dates being followed across Odisha, devotees are advised to check the announcements and ritual schedules issued by their respective temples and local puja committees.
While the dates may vary, the underlying significance of Dussehra remains the celebration of the triumph of good over evil and the victory of righteousness.
The differing observances in Odisha reflect the diversity of Hindu religious traditions, where regional customs and long-established temple practices play an important role in determining how festivals are celebrated.
