Chilika, Oct 7 (UDN): A potentially serious mishap was averted in Chilika Lake on Wednesday morning after a passenger boat carrying more than 50 people and over 25 motorcycles developed a mechanical fault and became stranded in the middle of the lake.
The boat had reportedly departed from Jahnikuda for Satapada under Krushnaprasad block in Puri district at around 7 am. A few minutes into the journey, the vessel developed a technical problem near Mainsa village, leaving it immobilised in deep waters.
Passengers Panic as Boat Gets Stuck
With water surrounding the stranded vessel and a large number of passengers and motorcycles on board, panic reportedly gripped those travelling on the boat. Passengers raised an alarm and sought immediate assistance.
Several children were also among those on board, adding to the concern as the boat remained stranded away from the shore.
A second boat was subsequently rushed to the spot and brought the stranded passengers and motorcycles to safety. All those on board were taken to Satapada safely.
No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
Safety Concerns Raised Over Chilika Boat Services
The Jahnikuda-Satapada route is a key transport link for people travelling across Chilika, with thousands of passengers using boat services regularly.
However, the latest incident has once again raised concerns over the safety and operational practices of passenger boats on the route.
Local residents alleged that some operators frequently carry passengers and motorcycles beyond the permitted capacity to increase earnings. They also claimed that such overloading, coupled with inadequate safety measures, could put passengers at risk.
Locals have urged the district administration to conduct regular inspections of boats, enforce capacity limits and ensure that safety norms are strictly followed to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
