Kandhamal, Sept. 24 (UDN): Incessant rainfall triggered a landslide at Kalinga Ghat along the Ganjam-Kandhamal border on Thursday, washing away a portion of an under-construction road and prompting authorities to shut the route to traffic.

Heavy water flow caused the road to cave in at Andharikote, with one side of the stretch reportedly washed away. The incident has raised concerns over movement along the strategically important National Highway-157, which connects parts of southern and western Odisha and forms part of the Ranchi-Vijayawada corridor.

Road Washed Away Amid Heavy Water Flow

According to reports, water flowing down from the Mundia area intensified amid continuous rainfall and washed away the road along with an under-construction guard wall.

The damage occurred in the Kalinga Ghat section, where a major landslide had also been reported last year.

In view of the prevailing weather conditions and the risk of further damage, the Kandhamal district administration has completely restricted traffic movement through the ghat.

NH Authorities To Inspect Damage

The Kandhamal Collector said officials of the National Highway authorities will inspect the affected stretch. Repair and restoration work will be taken up after the rainfall subsides and conditions become suitable for carrying out the work.

The administration has urged commuters to avoid travelling through Kalinga Ghat until further notice.

Residents and visitors have also been advised against entering the ghat area to take photographs or selfies, particularly in view of the continuing rain and the possibility of further landslides and road damage.

Authorities are maintaining a close watch on the affected stretch as heavy rainfall continues in the region.
