Puri, Sept. 16 (UDN): A striking sculpture of Lord Ganesha made almost entirely from unconventional materials has become a talking point among tourists visiting Puri beach during the Niladri Bije festivities.

Created by artist Banambar Pattanaik, the unique installation stands on the beach facing the sea and has been drawing visitors with its unusual design and illusion-like appearance.

Four-foot sculpture creates floating effect

The Ganesha idol measures around four feet in height and four feet in width and has been crafted using cardboard, foam, cloth and stone.

One of its most distinctive features is the way the deity’s face and trunk appear to float above the sand, creating a visually unusual effect. The sea behind the sculpture further enhances the presentation, with the artist using the natural backdrop to complement the design.

The installation has quickly emerged as a popular spot for tourists, many of whom are stopping to admire and photograph the artwork.

Artist focuses on innovation

Pattanaik said the sculpture weighs only around four kilograms, despite its size.

According to the artist, the idea was to present devotees with an unconventional interpretation of Lord Ganesha and demonstrate how everyday and alternative materials can be transformed into works of art.

He said artists often experiment with different materials and designs while creating idols of the deity, and he has also received appreciation in the past for his innovative creations.

Recognised for creative artworks

Pattanaik’s artistic work has received recognition in the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records.

The latest installation at Puri beach has added another distinctive creation to his portfolio while giving visitors an unusual artistic experience against the backdrop of the sea.
