Bhubaneswar, Sept. 7 (UDN): Odisha has recorded its highest-ever number of farmer registrations for paddy procurement, with 21,42,723 farmers registering for the ongoing Kharif season, Cooperation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta said on Monday.

The minister said the registration process would not be extended further, as the government had already provided an additional seven-day window considering farmers’ interests.
Farmers who are yet to complete the process can register until 1 am on Monday night, after which the registration window will close, Samanta clarified.
Registration Crosses Last Year’s Figure
The number of registrations has surpassed last year’s figure by a significant margin. Around 19.67 lakh farmers had registered for paddy sale during the previous season, while the current figure has crossed the 21-lakh mark.
Calling it a record achievement, Samanta said the government remains committed to protecting farmers’ interests and ensuring their participation in the procurement process.
He also questioned the Opposition’s decision to threaten agitation over the registration deadline, pointing out that the government had already granted an additional period for farmers to complete the process.
Government Keeps Eye on Fertiliser Supply
Apart from paddy procurement, the state government is also monitoring the availability and distribution of fertilisers ahead of the farming season.
Samanta said Odisha currently has around 24,400 tonnes of fertiliser in stock and that steps are being taken to ensure its proper distribution among farmers.
The government has warned dealers against negligence and irregularities in the distribution process. Strict action, including suspension and cancellation of licences, will be taken against dealers found violating the rules, the minister said.
With the registration deadline nearing its end, the government is now preparing for the next phase of the Kharif paddy procurement process while maintaining focus on timely availability of essential agricultural inputs.
