Srinagar, Sep 1: Electricity consumers across Jammu and Kashmir will now pay revised power tariffs, with an average 6.83 per cent increase coming into effect from Tuesday.
The revised rates, approved by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh (JERC-JKL), will apply to electricity consumed between September 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027.
For households, the increase will depend on monthly electricity consumption. Metered domestic consumers will pay Rs 2.45 per unit for consumption up to 200 units, Rs 4.20 for 201-400 units and Rs 4.60 for consumption above 400 units.
The tariff revision is intended to address the gap between the cost of supplying electricity and revenue collected by the two distribution companies, JPDCL and KPDCL. The government has committed more than Rs 2,420 crore in subsidy and grant support to help bridge the remaining gap.
The regulator said that without government financial support, meeting the entire revenue gap through higher tariffs alone could have resulted in an increase of around 40 per cent. The approved hike was therefore kept considerably lower to limit the burden on consumers.
The revised structure also includes provisions for different consumer categories, while BPL households and certain subsidised agricultural consumers will continue to receive support under the applicable tariff arrangements.
For households, the impact on monthly bills will vary according to electricity usage and sanctioned load. Businesses and commercial establishments will also have to factor the revised rates into their operating expenses.
The tariff change comes as consumers across the Union Territory continue to manage household expenses and rising costs. For businesses, higher electricity charges could add to operating costs, particularly for power-intensive activities.
With the new rates now in force, the government and power distribution companies will be closely watched on service quality, supply reliability and how effectively the subsidy support reaches eligible consumers.
