Dr. Paul said he did not support any attempt to prevent Bhagwat from visiting the US, arguing that the principles of freedom and equal treatment should apply to people across religious and ideological lines. He said those seeking greater religious freedom for Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs in India should also uphold the same principles when dealing with people visiting the US.
Dr. Paul said he had opposed calls to stop Bhagwat’s visit and stressed that preventing the RSS chief from travelling to America would undermine broader demands for religious freedom and peace. He referred to the situation in Manipur for suffering Christians and said the rights and safety of people belonging to every faith must be protected.
He also urged Mohan Bhagwat to use his proposed New York address to reassure Christians and members of other faith communities that India remains a democratic nation committed to equality. Dr. Paul called on the RSS chief to condemn incidents of violence and assure people that a situation such as the violence witnessed in Manipur should not be allowed to recur.
According to Dr. Paul, such a message from Bhagwat could help build greater confidence among different religious communities and contribute to peace in India. He said people of different faiths should be encouraged to engage in dialogue rather than division.
Dr. Paul, who has been associated with international peace initiatives involving all 7 major religious leaders, also appealed to peace-loving people to share his message and promote harmony across communities.
