New Delhi, August 12, 2026: New packaging rules have introduced stricter requirements on the use of plastic and synthetic materials, encouraging manufacturers to shift towards paper, paperboard, cellulose and other naturally derived alternatives.
Under the revised rules, packaging must be completely free from plastic. The use of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, PVC and other synthetic polymers, copolymers and laminates is not permitted.
Paper and naturally derived materials must also be free from aluminium foil and metallised layers. However, tin and glass containers have been permitted as packaging options.
The amendment was finalised after a public consultation. The draft regulations were published on April 28, inviting stakeholders to submit objections and suggestions within 60 days.
The revised provisions also state that certain requirements under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, will apply to the specified packaging.
The new rules focus on the materials used for packaging and are aimed at reducing dependence on plastic and promoting alternative packaging solutions.
The changes are expected to encourage manufacturers to review their packaging materials and adopt more environmentally responsible options.
