Berhampur, Aug. 6 (UDN): Refusing to let age, poverty and physical disability stand in the way of treatment, a 73-year-old man from Odisha’s Nayagarh district undertook an extraordinary journey of nearly 130 kilometres on a tricycle to reach MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, driven by a single hope—to walk again.
The elderly man, Sukadev Nahak, a resident of Barasahi village under Sarankul police limits, has been living with a fractured left leg and limited means of survival. With no family member able to accompany him and no financial resources to arrange transportation, he embarked on the arduous journey alone, pedalling his tricycle for nearly three days to reach the hospital.
Along the way, Sukadev depended on the generosity of strangers for food and rest, refusing to abandon his determination despite physical exhaustion and the challenges of travelling such a long distance.
“I came here only for treatment. The journey was extremely difficult, but I was determined to reach the hospital somehow. People on the way helped me with food,” Sukadev said after arriving at the medical facility.
The elderly man said his hardships worsened after his wife passed away in 2011. His only son is reportedly mentally unwell and unable to support the family, leaving Sukadev to fend for himself despite his advancing age and deteriorating health.
Doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital have admitted him for evaluation. Hospital Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Sudeepa Das said the medical team would ensure the elderly patient receives comprehensive treatment.
“We learnt that the elderly man had travelled around 130 kilometres on a tricycle in the hope of getting medical care. The hospital administration has taken note of his condition, and we will carry out all necessary investigations before deciding the appropriate treatment. We are committed to providing him the best possible medical care,” the superintendent said.
Sukadev’s remarkable journey has drawn widespread admiration, highlighting not only his unwavering determination but also the challenges many elderly and economically disadvantaged people continue to face in accessing healthcare in remote parts of the state.
His story stands as a moving reminder that even in the face of adversity, resilience and hope can inspire extraordinary acts of courage.
