Balasore, July 28 (UDN): Rising water levels in the Jalaka River have heightened flood concerns in Odisha’s Balasore district after the river crossed the danger mark on Tuesday morning, following two days of incessant rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

According to official data, the river’s danger level at Mathani in Basta block is 6.50 metres. At around 7:00 am, the water level was recorded at 6.51 metres, indicating that the river had already crossed the critical threshold.

The continuous downpour over Balasore and the river’s upper catchment areas in neighbouring Mayurbhanj district has led to a steady surge in the river’s flow. Heavy rainfall has been reported from Rasagovindpur, Morada, Suliapada and Chitrada, significantly increasing inflow into the Jalaka basin.

District authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rainfall is expected to persist under the influence of the prevailing weather system. Officials warned that any further rise in the river level could trigger flooding in low-lying areas.

As a precaution, the administration has identified vulnerable regions that could face inundation if the river continues to swell. At least five gram panchayats in Basta block and two gram panchayats in Balasore Sadar block are considered to be at risk.

Authorities have urged residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas to remain alert, follow official advisories and be prepared for any emergency measures should the situation deteriorate.

The district administration has intensified surveillance of embankments and river gauges while disaster response teams remain on standby to respond swiftly if flood conditions develop.
