Sandipani Schools of Madhya Pradesh: A Model of the Modern Gurukul Tradition

MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav’s vision to revive the Gurukul tradition of Maharishi Sandipani

New Delhi, July 18: Situated in Ujjain, the ashram of Maharishi Sandipani is where Lord Krishna, his elder brother Balarama, and their friend Sudama received their education together. This Gurukul was not merely a center of learning but also a place for character building, discipline, service, leadership, and the cultivation of life values. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is expanding Sandipani Schools with the vision of connecting this glorious tradition to modern education. These schools give equal importance to contemporary education, Indian knowledge, traditions, values, and personality development, emerging as a new model of the modern Gurukul.

India’s Gurukul tradition has always stood apart from other education systems of the world because of its structure, objectives, and values. Its aim was not only to impart knowledge but also to develop responsible citizens who understood their duties toward society and the nation. Carrying this vision forward in a modern context, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has established Sandipani Schools in the name of Maharishi Sandipani, the guru of Lord Krishna. These schools integrate modern science and technology with Indian culture, moral education, and life values.

The Concept of Sandipani Schools Is Rooted in Ujjain’s Heritage

The ashram of Maharishi Sandipani has long been an important center of Ujjain’s cultural and spiritual identity. It was here that Lord Krishna, Balarama, and Sudama studied the Vedas, Upanishads, military science, politics, music, mathematics, astrology, and the traditional 64 arts. This education extended far beyond scriptures, offering training in the art of living, social responsibility, and leadership.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, who hails from Ujjain, has envisioned connecting the state’s historical and cultural heritage with the modern education system. Sandipani Schools are the realization of this vision, where the younger generation receives modern education suited to global competition while remaining deeply connected to Indian culture and life values.

Integration of Modern Education and the Indian Knowledge Tradition

Sandipani Schools are equipped with smart classrooms, modern science laboratories, computer labs, robotics, digital learning, and innovation-based teaching facilities. Alongside these, yoga, moral education, Indian culture, leadership development, sports, and social responsibility have been incorporated as integral components of education. The objective is not only academic excellence but also the holistic development of every student.

Outstanding Academic Achievements

Students of Sandipani Schools are excelling not only in academics but also in science, sports, and other co-curricular activities. In the 2026 board examination results, 75.36% of Class 10 students and 75.10% of Class 12 students passed with First Division. A total of 41 Class 10 students and 17 Class 12 students secured positions on the merit list.

Balaghat Student Earns Opportunity to Visit NASA

Mayank Matre, a Class 12 student from Sandipani School at Waraseoni in Balaghat district, secured first place nationwide in the International Space Science Competition 2026. In recognition of this achievement, he has earned the opportunity to undertake an educational visit to NASA. His success also highlights the quality education and scientific outlook being fostered in these schools.

Sandipani Schools Becoming the First Choice of Parents

Parents across the state are increasingly placing their trust in Sandipani Schools. In areas where these schools are operational, large numbers of parents are choosing them over private schools. The state government has set a target of developing 274 Sandipani Schools across Madhya Pradesh. Most of these schools have already become operational, while construction of the remaining institutions is progressing rapidly.

The government is expanding this model in a phased manner. The objective is not merely to increase the number of schools but to develop an education system that offers a balanced integration of modern knowledge, science, technology, sports, yoga, the Indian knowledge tradition, and life values. In line with the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Sandipani Schools are emerging as a model in Madhya Pradesh that successfully combines modern education with the Gurukul tradition, equipping students not only with knowledge but also with values and a broader perspective on life.
