20 Fishermen Rescued After Two Andhra Trawlers Drift in Rough Sea off Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar, July 7 (UDN): A swift rescue operation by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Odisha Marine Police saved the lives of 20 fishermen after two fishing trawlers from Andhra Pradesh developed engine failure and drifted in turbulent waters off the Odisha coast.

The incident occurred in deep sea off the Puri coast, where the two trawlers became stranded after suffering mechanical failure amid rough weather, leaving the crew unable to return to shore.

Following a distress alert, the Indian Coast Guard immediately launched a search and rescue mission. Coast Guard vessel C-426 was deployed to the location and successfully reached the stranded boats despite challenging sea conditions.

Rescue personnel safely evacuated all 20 fishermen and secured the disabled trawlers before towing them to Paradip Port in Jagatsinghpur district. No injuries or casualties were reported during the operation.

After obtaining the necessary clearance from the Paradip Port Authorities, the rescued fishermen and their vessels were provided safe shelter inside the port until weather conditions improved and further arrangements could be made.

Officials said the coordinated response by the Indian Coast Guard and Odisha Marine Police helped avert a potential maritime disaster and ensured the safe return of the fishermen.

The incident comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of rough to very rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast. The weather agency has forecast squally winds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until conditions become favourable.

Maritime authorities have once again appealed to the fishing community to strictly follow weather advisories and ensure that vessels are equipped with functional communication and safety equipment before setting sail, particularly during the monsoon season when sea conditions can deteriorate rapidly.

The successful operation underscores the preparedness of maritime agencies and their crucial role in safeguarding the lives of fishermen operating along India’s eastern coastline.
