Five Choudwar Jail Inmates Test HIV-Positive During Routine Screening

Cuttack, July 5 (UDN): Five inmates of Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack district have tested positive for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) during routine medical screening, prompting prison authorities to strengthen healthcare and counselling measures within the correctional facility.

According to official sources, the HIV-positive inmates include three undertrial prisoners and two convicts. Following the diagnosis, the inmates have been placed under medical supervision and are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) through the designated ART Centre. Their health condition is stated to be stable.

Prison authorities said appropriate arrangements have been made for the affected inmates in accordance with medical protocols, while ensuring access to treatment, counselling and regular health monitoring.

The latest cases come days after eight inmates of Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar were also found to be HIV-positive during routine health examinations, prompting prison authorities to intensify medical surveillance across correctional institutions in the State.

Officials said all newly admitted inmates undergo mandatory medical screening, including tests for various communicable diseases, as part of the prison health protocol. Regular health camps, awareness programmes and counselling sessions are also being conducted to promote awareness about HIV/AIDS, reduce stigma and encourage timely diagnosis and treatment.

Authorities clarified that HIV is not transmitted through casual contact and reiterated that all necessary medical care and preventive protocols are being followed in line with the guidelines of the Health Department.

The prison administration said it would continue periodic health screening of inmates to facilitate early detection of diseases and ensure appropriate medical care within correctional facilities.
