Rourkela, July 1 (UDN): The reported felling of nearly 2,000 trees inside the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela campus has triggered widespread concern, with environmentalists, local residents and student groups demanding an inquiry into the large-scale tree cutting.
The controversy erupted after allegations surfaced that a significant number of trees had been removed as part of infrastructure development works within the institute. Critics questioned the environmental impact of the exercise and sought clarity on whether the required statutory permissions had been obtained before the trees were felled.
Environmental activists have urged the authorities to disclose the details of the project, the basis for tree felling and the compensatory afforestation measures proposed to offset the ecological loss. They also called for greater transparency in projects involving the removal of green cover.
Responding to the controversy, institute authorities maintained that the tree removal was undertaken in connection with approved developmental activities and in compliance with applicable regulations. They said compensatory plantation and other environmental safeguards would be implemented as per the prescribed norms.
The issue has sparked a broader debate on balancing infrastructure expansion with environmental conservation. Meanwhile, the matter is expected to draw the attention of the concerned authorities for further examination.
