Paralakhemundi, June 29 (UDN): A temple priest was arrested in Odisha’s Gajapati district after he allegedly assaulted and humiliated a minor boy on suspicion of theft at a Hanuman temple in Paralakhemundi.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the minor had reportedly gone to the temple premises to play during a holiday. According to police, the priest allegedly accused the boy of theft and subjected him to physical assault.
The incident sparked outrage among local residents, who intervened and alerted the police after witnessing the alleged assault.
Acting promptly, personnel from Paralakhemundi police station rushed to the spot, rescued the child and shifted him to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical examination and treatment. The accused priest was subsequently taken into custody and later arrested.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Preliminary information revealed that the minor has been living with his grandmother in Paralakhemundi, as his father is deceased and his mother is currently working as a migrant labourer in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
Expressing concern over the incident, District Child Protection Officer Arun Tripathy termed the alleged assault as deeply unfortunate and assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against those responsible.
“No child should be subjected to such treatment under any circumstances. Allegations, if any, should be dealt with through lawful means,” Tripathy said.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for greater awareness regarding child rights and protection, with locals demanding stringent action against the accused.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
