Odisha Leaders Recall Emergency as Nation Marks 51 Years Since Its Imposition

Bhubaneswar, June 25 (UDN): As the nation observed the 51st anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency on Thursday, political leaders, former detainees and senior journalists in Odisha reflected on one of the most debated and defining chapters in India’s democratic history.

Odisha Leaders Recall Emergency as Nation Marks 51 Years Since Its Imposition

The Emergency, declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the night of June 25, 1975, remained in force for nearly 21 months. The period witnessed the suspension of civil liberties, widespread arrests of opposition leaders and activists, and strict censorship of the media.

Recalling his experiences during the Emergency, senior BJD leader and Rairakhol MLA Prasanna Acharya described the period as a time when democratic rights were severely curtailed.

“The Emergency transformed the entire country into a virtual jail. Thousands of political leaders, activists and ordinary citizens were detained, and fundamental rights were suspended. As a student in Sambalpur at the time, I too was arrested and spent nearly 19 months in jail,” Acharya said, adding that the experiences of those days remain etched in memory.

Former minister Praful Ghadei said the Emergency served as a significant lesson on the importance of democratic freedoms and constitutional rights.

“The period demonstrated how democratic values can come under strain. While people’s voices may be suppressed temporarily, they can never be silenced permanently. The Emergency remains a reminder of the need to safeguard democratic institutions,” he observed.

“Strict restrictions were imposed on the media, and many opposition leaders were arrested soon after the Emergency was proclaimed. It marked a critical turning point in India’s democratic journey,” Das said.

The Emergency continues to evoke strong political and historical debate even after more than five decades. Historians and political observers view the period as a crucial reminder of the importance of preserving democratic institutions, protecting civil liberties and upholding the constitutional right to dissent.

Various programmes and discussions were organised across the country on the occasion, with participants reiterating the need to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic values and constitutional principles.
