The fissures have been detected in the Chari Nahaka section of Devi Subhadra’s Darpadalana chariot and in the Kanaguja and Singha Birala carved portions of all three chariots. Artisans and technical personnel began reinforcement work on Friday, fitting metal clamps and carrying out restoration measures to prevent further expansion of the cracks.

According to servitors involved in the construction process, the cracks are a result of prolonged exposure of the timber to high temperatures and direct sunlight. To strengthen the affected portions, craftsmen are filling the gaps with a mixture of wood powder and adhesive before securing the structures with specially designed clamps.

Officials noted that similar weather-related cracks have appeared during previous Rath Yatra preparations and were successfully repaired without affecting the structural integrity of the chariots.

Maharana servitor Bala Krushna Maharana said the damage is confined to the upper framework and does not pose any threat to the safety of the chariots.

“The cracks are not serious. Our primary concern is always the wheels and axles, as they bear the entire load during the festival. Cracks in the upper portions generally occur due to prolonged exposure to the sun and can be repaired effectively with clamps and traditional reinforcement methods. The timber used for chariot construction is extremely strong and durable,” he said.

Alongside the repair work, authorities have stepped up the installation of critical safety mechanisms. A mechanical team equipped with heavy-duty lifting equipment and hydraulic jacks has begun fitting the braking systems on the massive wooden wheels of the three chariots.

A senior technician associated with the work said the braking system plays a vital role in protecting the wheels and ensuring better control of the chariots during the pulling process.

“The braking mechanism is being installed as part of standard safety procedures. It helps reduce stress on the wheels when brakes are applied and enhances overall operational safety during the Rath Yatra,” the technician said.

Despite the heat-related challenges, construction and finishing work on the chariots continue as scheduled. Temple authorities and servitors have expressed confidence that all repair, reinforcement and safety installations will be completed well before the commencement of the world-famous festival, which attracts lakhs of devotees to Puri every year.
